The Blessings Challenge

I had a client here the other day who’s in a rough place. According to her, nothing is going right in her life. Zero, Zip. Bupkis. She was hunched over in the chair, hair in the face, and no matter what positive news I saw coming for her, it wasn’t enough. She was so caught up in her negative zone, that she couldn’t let anything hopeful in.  And I don’t think she wanted to.

She makes Grumpy Cat look like a kid on Red Bull and Pixie Stix.

She makes Grumpy Cat look like a kid on Red Bull and Pixie Stix.

Check it: when I’d last seen her a few months before, she was freaked out because she’d been unemployed for awhile. She never thought she’d work again.  I saw a job coming, and guess what,  she DID get it.  But now its not enough. She hates the job, it doesn’t pay enough, she doesn’t like the commute, yadda yadda yadda.

As a psychic, it wouldn’t much matter what I told her — she would never step up and accept anything good.   She’d just let the bad roll on over her.

Look, I understand that, when tough things are being fired at you like one of those tennis ball machines, its hard to stay positive.  These are precisely the times that call for summoning up your inner badass.

I wrote in my book, OK, So You’re Dead that souls on the Other Side vie for the chance to incarnate into human form.  I know, I know – who would choose to deal with all the stuff we have to deal with down here? But the truth is, being human offers the fast track to our spiritual development.   It’s serious boot camp.

So when you’re faced with a rough patch, you have a choice. Being a Debbie Downer may feel good because it completely absolves you of any responsibility, but it will change not one blessed thing.  It does not serve you.  In fact, that downer energy will just attract more icky stuff, like one nasty-ass magnet.

Now I’m not saying that you act like Mary Poppins On Nitrous Oxide, either.  I just want you to recognize that we are all given positive energy to work with in our lives. It’s a law of nature: yin and yang, dark and light, up and down. There’s never any bad that doesn’t balance out with something good; you may have to look for it, but its ALWAYS there.

So here’s the challenge: every night before you go to sleep, tick off seven things going right in your world (seven is a power number).

th-1

Your list could be as simple as the fact that you’re sleeping in a comfy bed, your kids are healthy, you have a roof over your head, you got a smile from the coffee guy, you’re not your mother-in-law, etc. I want you to do this every night for two weeks.

Whenever you encounter a tough moment during the day, recall one of your seven blessings from the night before. It counteracts the “heaviness” of that initial moment.

NOTE: The suckier your life seems at the moment, the more you need to do this!!!

I think what you’ll find is that the rough edges in your world start to smooth out. The more you look for what’s good and right, the more things will start to go right.

This is not Pollyanna talk; there are real physical properties to our attitude. It’s strictly an energy thing.  So when you’re challenged by the world, choose to stand up and claim the good stuff.  It’s like a shot of antibiotics to negative funk.

5 Must-Have Spiritual Stones

I first got turned on to crystals back in the 80s (didn’t we all?).  At one point,  they were everywhere in my tiny apartment.  My roommate would just roll his eyes when he saw another added to the collection.  I was about 4 stones away from officially being declared a hoarder.

All these years later, I still have plenty of beautiful little stones, but there are a few in particular that I work with the most.  They’re my go-to crystals when I do any psychic work.

QUARTZ  CRYSTAL;  Like a Chanel suit, this stone goes with everything.  It’s the kind of crystal that can serve any purpose you assign it.  Yup, you can “program” it so that it’s electromagnetic properties help attract whatever your intention is.  Just hold it in your non-dominant hand, envisioning your goal uploading into it.  When you feel a “click,” you’re done.  You can re-program it for something else, by envisioning that you’re clearing it, then repeating the upload process.

I keep these on my reading table, simply because of the positive energy that seems to flow from the little buggers.

ROSE QUARTZ:  The soft pink color aligns with the heart chakra.  I love the gentle vibe surrounding rose quartz.  It’s not throwing off hot monkey-love vibes, more of a gentle, patient energy.  It’s the kind of love vibe you have for your pet, or your grandma has for you.  Unconditional, sweet, giving.  It’s the Aunt Bee of crystals.

th

This is a good stone to work with when any sort of grief or loss is going on.  It heals the heart, which makes it great to carry after a breakup, a death or anything that makes you feel like you’re walking around with a giant hole in your chest.

th-3

LAPIS:  I can get lost staring at this gorgeous blue-gold stone.  It’s powerfully spiritual, used to help connect with higher realms and energies.  th

Lapis throws off a really strong metaphysical energy and really helps open up my channel.  It turns up the volume in a major way.  Nigel Tufnel (all hail, Tap!) breaks it down for ya….

AMETHYST:  Like lapis, this is a spiritual stone.  The energy of amethyst, however, isn’t quite as macho.  Amethyst resonates with the crown chakra, helping us connect with the channel of enlightenment and awareness.  It just makes me feel good to have around, ’cause its so purty.

th-4

OBSIDIAN:  Of course, when I’m having trouble staying spiritual, this repels/absorbs any negative energies.  When a client requires some seriously heavy work, obsidian is like an anchor in turbulent waters.  The dark color works like a super-magnet for grounding me when my head is all over the place.

Not for nothing, obsidian is helpful for blocking someone’s icky vibe from affecting you.  I had a boss who was, shall we say, an idiot with a heaping side of Pain in the Ass.  I hated going to work, but once I put a giant chunk of obsidian on my desk, he didn’t come around as much — and I   stopped wanting to punch him in the throat.

This was what I wanted to do all damn day....

At any rate, these particular crystals are must-haves for the spiritual life.  As Bob Dylan once sang, “Everybody must get stoned.”  In a good way.

Get the Funk Out: Space Clearing Basics

This is the time of year when we start getting that “spring cleaning” itch.  As the weather warms up, we want to open the windows and let in some fresh air, banishing the stale old winter vibe.  You can tell when a room “feels” funky, can’t you?  I know I sure as heck can.  So cleaning — spring or otherwise — has a calming, healing effect on us.

Whenever you’re vacuuming, washing windows or flipping a mattress, you’re doing a version of “space clearing,” moving molecules (not to mention cat hair) around.  But there are some other tools you can add to your bucket to really bring some energetic freshness to a space.  Here’s what I like to use.

SAGE:  This is the classic clearing tool, breaking up anything negative and resetting things back to neutral.  You can buy sage in several forms, but I like the stick form myself.

Sageing – or “smudging” as its often called — is easy.  Light the end of the sage bundle, then blow out the flame.  The sage will begin to smoke.  I go room by room, walking in a counterclockwise motion and moving the bundle up and down to thoroughly cleanse the area (in nature work, counterclockwise is the direction used to reverse or undo something). I pay particular attention to corners, since stagnant energy can hang out there, just like dust bunnies.  BIG SAFETY NOTE:  Keep a fireproof container under the sage, to catch any random sparks.  You can use a shell, like this:

I carry a ceramic dish filled with sand under my sage stick; when I’m done, I extinguish it by grinding it into the sand.

When smudging, open a window to carry the stale vibes out of the room.  Oh, and one more note:  sage smells kinda like pot.  So be prepared for some funny looks from your neighbors.  And maybe a Cheech and Chong joke or two.

SALT:  Salt has long been known for its power to ground energy and keep negativity away.  After a good vacuuming, I’ll put a pinch of sea or kosher salt in the corners of a room.  You can also sprinkle a bit near your front door to keep bad vibes from entering your home or office.

It's not just for potato chips anymore...

It’s not just for potato chips anymore…

SOUND:  I love the sound of bells and chimes.  There are windchimes all over my backyard — and a few in my house, too.  Chimes have the power to break up stale energy.  Tibetan singing bowls can do that, too when you use them in a space clearing.

I’ve gotten so many questions on how to make the bowl” sing,” and there is a trick to it, so here’s a quick how-to demo (and please pardon my Bad Hair Day)….

Once you’ve gotten the bowl to sing, walk around the space counterclockwise, hitting corners and closets to break up old energy.  If you don’t have a bowl or bells, clapping your hands can also clear a space.

WATER:  We wash our faces, dishes, clothes, floors and dogs with it.  And it clears away energy funk nicely, too.  I fill a spray bottle with water and a drop or two of lavender oil (just ’cause it smells nice).  Then I hold my hands over the bottle, putting an intention into it to purify whatever it touches.  I spray this energized water into the corners of a room, again moving in a counterclockwise direction.

Anyhoozle, doing a regular space clearing will make a huge difference in how things flow.  People will be less cranky, animals will behave a little better , everyone will just feel …better.  And by the way, don’t limit these techniques to your home.  Clearing your office and your car, anywhere you spend a lot of time, is a good habit to get into.

So put down the Swiffer and get your sage on, already.  ‘Cause this is the only kind of funk you want around you…
